Food update - Day 43 and 44; Reality is Setting in.

I'm going to sound like a broken record here, but the weekends ARE MY NEMESIS.  I go head to head with this nasty bitch each week, and it wins.  Every time.

I'm sitting around, watching the closing ceremonies, and I feel like a fat bastard.  There's way too much food in ma' beh-lay.  I'm presented with food based decisions each and every Friday and Saturday night, and I literally crumble under the pressure.  I'm a loser.

It's like I become an orangutan on the weekend.  I need someone to come hold my hand, seriously.

Oh, and why does frickin beer have so many Calories??  How is any self-respecting Man of the City supposed to go out and tie one on while still maintaing weight loss goals??  I don't get it.  5 weeks in to this thing, and I'm like WAAAAY tired of Michelob Ultra and Amstel Light.

This is getting hard.

Friday:
nutrigrain bar = 130 cal.
Subway 6" chicken breast (no cheese, friends. you won't even miss it) = 320 cal.
bag o' baked Lays = 140 cal.
1/2 Turkey wrap (Panini's, blah.) = 175 cal.
side of potato chips = 225 cal.
pretzels = 120 cal.
Frito dip = 500 cal.??
Michelob Ultra 8 @95 = 760 cal.

Friday Grand Total = 2370 Calories.  Holy Jesus it hurts to type that.  What a fat ass.  You just can't eat anything these days.

Saturday didn't really get any better.

Saturday food:
nutrigrain bar = 130 calories
1/2 Baked Brie appetizer (it wasn't all that massive) = 200 ish cal.
Vegetable Boxty (Irish potato pancake thingy; def. had to Google this one) = 200 cal.
side of mashed potatoes = 150 cal.
Harp lager 3 @ 140 = 420 cal.
Miller Light = 95 cal.
Piraat Belgian Ale 3 @ 200 (great friggin beverage. extra tasty and 10.5% alcohol) = 600 cal.
pretzels = 150 cal.

Weekend activities: I hit the Jim on Saturday.  GREAT workout.  Good run, followed up by another 15 minutes on the elliptical.  I did a fair amount of shovelling snow before that, and we all know that turned out to be a waste....the snow magically reappeared Sunday morning.

Saturday Grand Total = 1945 Calories

Oy vei.  That's a lot of shizz.  That's what eating at Sullivan's (quality Irish joint in Lakewood) and going out to Bier Markt will do for you.

This essentially translates into a Mammoth Fail on my part this weekend.  I'm sorry, friends.

I'm scared for my Tuesday weigh in.  I need some help here.  I may have to lop off one of my arms or something...

Well, I have one more day.  One more day to end this week strong, eat smart, and get in a solid workout.

Day 43 food recap - Great Expectations

Expectations are a curious thing.  When set low enough, there is opportunity to be surprised and/or rewarded.  If set too high, there is almost always disappointment.

The latter is a none too familiar scenario in BK's world.

All week, I've been as giddy as a school boy, ready to hit the town for Cleveland Restaurant Week.  I setup a reservation last night at Ponte Vecchio, which resides over by the Superior Viaduct, near the West Bank of the awesome Flat's, essentially attached to that Stonebridge condo complex.

I've been looking forward to dining at Ponte Vecchio for some time now.  It's just one of those places that I never quite made it out to.  I mean, it's Italian food.  North America has become COMPLETELY saturated with Italian food.  It's almost NEVER my first choice for dining.

Alas, this particular restaurant does boast one of the best dining views in the city.  In that regard, it did not disappoint.  The picture to the right depicts a typical view from their parking lot.  For my money, the best angle of my fine, fine city.

Anyway, on to the grubbing experience.  PV offered a 4 course prix fixe menu.  My dining partner and I chose to order all different, and share in the goodness.  Here is a down and dirty list of the good, the bad, and the ugly:

The GOOD:
1. the bread and oil
2. the view of Cleveland

The BAD/UGLY:
1. everything else

I mean....out of 9 total food offerings, the bread and olive oil stood out on top.  Sad, really.  I don't want to go through EVERY SINGLE course and tell you what failed.  In a nutshell, everything just felt like it was prepared at 2:00 that afternoon (just sitting around)....and everything was DRAMATICALLY underseasoned.

I'm no Iron Chef (though I guarantee i could beat Cat Cora), but COME ON.  Salt, pepper, rosemary, thyme, lemon, lime....SOMETHING.....ANYTHING.

Needless to say, I/we were very disappointed.  I haven't even mentioned the service, which was absolutely awful as well.  Nice guy, but TOTALLY over matched, and in the weeds.

I walked away salty (pun!), and I'm still kind of pissed while typing this out.  I work hard for my moneeey...sooo haaard for ma' money!

In conclusion, don't go there.  Go to the parking lot, take a few picures, hop back in your car, and drive over to Lola.  I really should've known better....it's restaurant week, and all of these chefs/cooks are just trying to stay ahead of the potential crowds....bleh.

The silver lining here is that I didn't really stuff my face.  My daily food intake was moderated.

Daytime:
apple nutrigrain cereal bar = 130 calories
strawberry yogurt (damn giant eagle and their bush league fat free yogurt) = 80 cal.
fat free Pringles = 75 cal.
quizno's side salad w/ caesar dressing = 150 cal.

Dinner at Ponte Vecchio:
bread and oil (the best part of the entire experience) = 150 cal.
Kobe Beef carpaccio (beef pierogi, essentially) = 150 cal.
house salad (soooo horrible that i had one bite, and then mumbled several Hail Mary's) = 0
zucchini crusted Cod over orzo (yeah, i know, bad choice; i hate half) = 150 cal.?
pumpkin filled ravioli w/ chicken chunks/shanks (i had like 1 piece of each) = 125 cal.
creme brulee (actually not bad, but served room temperature??) = 200 cal.?
2 glasses pinot noir = 150 calories
Amstel Light = 96 cal.

Thursday Grand Total = 1450 calories

Not too bad, considering I didn't have a chance to workout.  Hell, I was hitting it hard earlier this week and needed a day off.

   * - I also want to note, for the record, that BK is NOT a picky eater.  He eats everything, and gives all food its' equal opportunity.  This meal was just BAD.

Hump Day food recap - Day 41

Damn, 41 days...???  Dude, seriously, it feels like yesterday that I sat down and decided to do, "all of this".

Somehow, it is still both pleasing and liberating for me to write down all of the food that I eat.  And honestly, not knowing if anyone (besides my Mom) actually reads this thing is not all that concerning to me.  I'm finding it quite helpful to clearly see what it is that I had been feeding my mouth.  I can definitely say that I almost NEVER snack in between meals.  This is such a novel concept, eh?

I won't lie.  This hasn't been easy.  I still get cravings for chocolate, white russians, double IPA's, Snyder's ranch pretzel pieces, etc.  Hell, if losing and maintain a perfect body weight WAS easy, we'd all be hot....and honestly, we can't have that.  What the hell fun is THAT??

Hump Day treated me alright.  Had a good day behind my monitor and keyboard, had a nice workout, ordered some Thai take-out....sh*t...can it get much better? Eh?  I think not.

Daylight:
box of sun maid raisins = 130 calories
Lean Cuisine ravioli (NOT ohio city pasta, btw) = 220 cal.
apple = 80 cal.
fat free Ruffles (i see absolutely no problem with Olestra, none. oh wait, i have to hit the john real quick) = 75 cal.

Supper:
fried Wonton 4 @ 50ish = 200 ish calories
chicken something stir fry = 225 cal.
2/3 ish cup of steamed rice = 150 cal.

1/2 glass of pinot noir = 50 cal.
1/2 skinny cow ice cream sando = 70 cal.

Grand Total for Wednesday = 1200 calories

Workout:  30 minutes of cardio sandwiched around 20 or so minutes of a circuit routine.

iPod randomness:  "Lookin Out My Back Door" by Creedence.  Maaaaan, everytime I hear this song i'm instantly transported to the Big Lebowski and the Dude, in his car, pounding on the roof to this song, etc.  I just LOVE that movie.

Day 40 Food Recap

Tuesday didn't have a chance.

With renewed motiviation by my side, I stuck to my guns yesterday.  I consumed food with razor sharp focus and hit the CSU gym with a racer's determination.

One day at a time.

Daylight:
apple nutrigrain bar = 130 calories
weight watcher's smart one; angel hair marinara = 230 cal.
strawberry yogurt = 100 cal.
pretzels = 110 cal.

Nighty night:
Chicken Parm
1/2 chicken breast = 125 cal.
pasta sauce = 75 cal.
angel hair (i know, pete or repeat? you can never have too much angel hair) = 125 cal.
garlic bread (small pieces of baguette) = 100 cal.
skinny cow ice cream treat = 70 cal.

Done and done.  Grand Total = 1065 Calories

Workout:  Hammered out 25 minutes of cardio before my Hammy started to fail, and then 25 minutes of weights.

Songs of note to appear on my iPod:  "Lump" by POTUSA...an oldie but a goodie.  I just love shuffle mode, you really NEVER KNOW what's going to come on.

Boy v. Scale - The Inevitable Fail

I've prepared myself for this.  No one is perfect.  Sadly, not only have I let myself down, but in some odd, twisted way, I feel like I've let you down, my reader(s).

I hopped up on the scale, actually feeling positive about this, and was instantly disamayed.  In the matter of 3.643 seconds, my life was put back into perspective.  Serves me right...

My weight this week checks in at:

210.3 lbs.

I weigh basically the same as I did one week ago....and if you want to get technical, I'm UP .1 pounds.

I know this is not the end of the world.  I'm perfectly aware that I was NOT going to continue to lose 2-3 pounds each and every week....but it still hurts.  I won't lie, I'm a bit disappointed.

I don't want to make excuses here, but I feel like I owe it to 'us' to make an attempt at explaing this.  This week was odd.  I just didn't feel like I was in the zone.  The system that I had been following for the past 5 weeks fell out of sync....and here's why:

1.  Last Tuesday - on the heels of a GREAT weigh in last week, I immediately sprinted out to bottle my beer that night.  we drank a bunch as we bottled, and feasted on a mountain of BBQ.  no excuse.  I know I haven't seen these friends in years...but still...i could have been better.

2.  Illness - I know, i know.  Everyone gets sick, everyone copes.  i thought i was handling it just fine, but all in all, I clearly DID NOT workout as frequent, nor as efficient.

3.  Ego - I needed a check. i'm probably cheating myself by not reporting EVERYTHING properly, ie. last Saturday. i hosted a game night, where i crossed paths with many fun appetizers and many beers. not only did i not eat in moderation, but i probably didn't track my consumption close enough.

After having mild success, it's easy to get overconfident.  It really is.  Even after a short 5 week period, you start taking small things for granted.  It's human nature...and sadly, I'm only human.

MY PROMISE IS THIS:

No more cheating.  I promise that I will come back STRONG this week...as strong as ever.  I have the motiviation, and a renewed faith.  Hell, this week could be a blessing in disguise.*  This is my opportunity to show my true colors, and rise above this mild failure.

     * - as you can see, i'm trying to fit in as many cliches as possible this week. ive got a few more, keep reading!!

All cliches aside, I actually COULDN'T WAIT to get in to work to write this latest installment. I literally sprinted across St. Clair to get to the door of my building (well, there many have been a few cars barrelling towards me; semantics).

I would normally feel completely disgusted with myself...but no.  After my confrontation with the scale, i think i paced my kitchen for like 3 minutes....just walking back and forth with a sh*t grin on my face.  I was plotting how i was going to break this news to the Internet, and I was brainstorming how NOT to let this happen next week.

Again, this is not the end of the world.  It's ok.  Life is still good.

Not to trivilaize my Monday food logging, but today clearly has a more important message.  I'm not going to type everything out.  I did fairly well yesterday.  I had a nice workout, and came home to make a pork burrito and fresh salsa.  I didn't have a late night snack, and I didn't snack at work...

Monday Grand Total = 1410 Calories

ASIDE:  I heard a new Spoon song this morning on my drive in, "I Saw the Light".  Cool song, and very timely.  I HAVE seen the light.  I know that sounds hella cheesy, but I'm ready to get back after this, with a fresh, clear outlook.

Next Tuesday can't come soon enough.

Day 38 Food recap - Leftover Sunday

Happy Monday!!  It's the start of another fun week here in Cleveland, which just happens to be Restaurant Week.  Something like 25 or so restaurants in the area are sporting a $30 3/4 course prix fix menu.

I've never been to Ponte Vecchio, and have wanted to for some time, so I secured myself a reservation for Thursday evening.....I can't wait!!  Thursday is also the start of my bar bowling league over there at ABC....so Thursday is setting up to be quite smashing.

Team Pinicorn* is going down!!! (yes, i used an entire line of my blog to mention that)

     * - my friend's team name; let the laughter commence

Game night, again, went off pretty well.  A nice ancillary benefit that spun off of game night was the amount of leftovers!!!  I was able to create an entire meal of food from the app's that made it through the night.

Score.

Sunday food:
pretzels = 110 Calories
raisins = 130 cal.
cocktail meatballz = roughly 400 calories?
cheese/crackers/fruit/olive tapenade = 350 cal.
1 single glass of Pinot Noir (i stress the 1...i didnt even want that, but one absolutely MUST have a glass of red with this high quality cheese that I purchased, not to mention the trio of tapenades that were present!!) = 100 cal. (it was a big glass)
skinny cow skinny dipper (these things were actually decent for the small caloric content, but alas, now i'm out of them) = 80 cal.

Workout:  F yeah.  I actually scraped myself off of the couch for an hour to head over to CSU.  Even after being gone for an hour...the same stupid USA v. UK curling match was still on.  I still don't understand curling.

As an aside, CSU on the weekends is frickin annoying.  Have I mentioned this before??  They let area high schools come out to use the volleyball courts.  The place was INFESTED with little kids and v-ball moms.  The only silver lining that I can come up with is that I think I now understand the rules of field hockey....they also have some kind of amateur intramural type field hockey league that plays on the weekends too.

Sunday Grand Total = 1170 Calories

I'm eagerly anticipating my next battle with the scale tomorrow morning.  These weeks seem to be FLYING by!!

Day 36 and 37 Food Recaps

Well....another weekend comes, and another weekend goes....gone with not much more than a wimper.  Despite holding on to a lingering head cold, and not being able to put forth a decent workout, I've done well with my food consumption.

I kept things low key on Friday.  I knew Saturday was going to be a handful, so I didn't go out, and I didn't drink (i know, seriously. i don't even know me anymore...lol).

Saturday was indeed crazy.  I got up 'round 9:30, paid a visit to the West Side Market and the Dirty Bird (the Giant Eagle on Detroit and Bunts), hit the Steelyard for some quick Targeting and Wal-Marting, and still SOMEHOW managed to view 5 homes on the near West Side.

I barely got home in time to start throwing together appetizers and small plates for game night.  I put together a nice Guacamole, cocktail meatballs and lil' smokies, and a cheddar cheese pimiento crostini.  I was running around the kitchen....MAD!!!

Game night was fun, despite a few last minute cancellations.  All of the food, company, and gaming went off fabulously.  I even managed watch my *portions!!!  Imagine that!

     * - well, not my beer consumption, details to follow

Friday:
daytime:
1/2 Panera everything bagel w/ veggie cream cheese = 200 calories
Pesto Gnocchi (leftover portion) = 150 cal.
apple = 80 cal.
Pringles, fat free = 110 cal.

night:
chicken breast = 230 cal.
2 medium to small Red potatoes = 200 cal.
skinny cow ice cream sammich = 140 cal.

No workout due to the sickness.

Friday Grand Total = 1125 Calories (not bad for a Friday!!)

Saturday:
day:
M&M's (don't ask) = 250 calories
1/2 bag of kettle chips = 60 cal.
night:
cocktail meatballs/smokies (not really sure on the portion, things got hazy, quickly) = 300 cal.?
cheese and crackers (smoked gouda, smoked cheddah) = 75 cal.
one prosciutto wrapped Asparagus spear (nice work sister christian) = 50 cal.?
2 cheddar pimiento crostinis = 175 cal.
sesame crackers w/ sundried tomato tapenade (4ish) = 75 cal.?
Michelob Ultra 9 @ 95 = 855 calories
Pinot Noir (2 glasses, i think) = 150 cal.

Workout: Nope, but I was running around like a madman, so I stayed a wee bit active.

Saturday Grand Total = 1985 Calories

All in all, not too shabby.  I'm looking forward to a couple of decent workouts before my next weigh in.  I'm actually excited for a weigh in...that's surprising.

Days 34 and 35 - my first bout with sickness

Good afternoon, Internet.  Well, I'm experiencing something for the first time since embarking on this weight loss journey.  I'm coping with illness.  I know...poor BK.  I don't have to explain to you how inconvenient it is being sick.  The effects are apparent.  It blows.

I don't have the energy to go to the Rec Center, I don't have the energy to shovel snow, I don't have the motivation to go shopping, and I barely have the desire to get up in the mornings!!!  I'm the co-planner of a nice little board game night on Saturday, and I just HATE knowing that I'm not at 100%!!!

Well, ok. I'm being fairly dramatic.  I'm not really THAT sick...but this IS throwing a wrench into my daily system.  And I'll tell you what I DO have the energy to do....frickin EAT.  THAT desire hasn't dissipated.

Everywhere I look; here at work, home, out with friends, I see potential snacks in my cross-hairs.  It sucks.  It's taking every last joule of my mental toughness to stay strong.....but I'll let you in on a secret:  The longer I progress in this diet, the easier THAT gets!!!

So below will be the last two days' food recaps.  No real flaws are apparent.  I did join a bar bowling league/team on Thursdays....thus the teams met up last night, at a bar.  It's like I'm just TRYING to F with myself...just trying to give myself another challenge:  Mid-week drinking and tom foolery.

ASIDE: Strangely enough, as you will see below, it appears as if my dinners these past two days have been sponsored by Ohio City pasta.  I ponied up for some fresh pasta when I visited the West Side Market last weekend, and finally decided that I'd better cook it up before they lose their fresh qualities!!  This stuff was GOOD!!

Wednesday:
Daytime:
O.J. = 100 cal.
box of Sun Maid raisins = 130 cal.
salad = 200 calories
can of albacore tuna = 110 cal. (didn't finish the can)
strawberries!!!  = 16 cal. - ish (i looked it up!)

Supper:
fresh Ohio City goat cheese raviolli, 6 pcs. = 180 cal.
pasta sauce = 100 cal.
garlic bread = 75 calories
skinny cow skinny dipper ice cream treat = 80 cal.

Workout: Yes, a wee bit.  I ran for about 20 minutes, and then my sinuses caved in and caused me to basically stop breathing.  I then decided that I'm getting sick, and should stop working out for a few days.  I took it to the brink, people!!

Thursday:
Break/Lunch:
orange juice = 100 cal.
cinnamon pop tart = 190 calories
strawberries = 12 cal.
strawberry non-fat yogurt = 100 cal.
Weight Watchers smart one; angel hair marinara = 230 cal.

Supper:
fresh Ohio City sweet pea Gnocchi = about 300 cal.
pesto sauce = 180 calories
garlic bread = 75 cal.
cheese/crackers (not much, just a few bites) = 75 cal.
Michelob Ultra 2 @ 95 = 190 cal.

I skipped my workout Thursday, mercifully.  I could barely BREATHE all day.  My nose and head are all kinds of messed up.

I consumed a couple of beers at my bar bowling league meeting at the ABC Tavern on W.25th...but I didn't want to!!!  I swear!!

Oh well, I'm gonna lay low.  Take 'er easy here Friday night, in preparation for a nice lillte gathering Saturday night, and house hunting Sunday....

Day 33 Food Recap

So it's Wednesday.  I'm fresh off of a moderately successful Tuesday weigh-in.....and what do I do??  Pretty much flush that right down the toilet (see right).

It's been three weeks since my buddies and I brewed our beer over there in Strongsville, so it was time to head back and bottle it!!

ASIDE:  I guess when I signed up to do this like 2-3 months ago, the diet was only a twinkle in my fat little eye...that being said, we brewed an IPA, which in general, are the highest Calorie beers going.  Though it IS pretty frickin tasty!!!

Back to our regularly scheduled web log.  So anyway, the beer is tasty, and we decided to have dinner at this place again, which specializes in BBQ.  OH, forgot to mention this....this week was OGRE FEST over at this place.  Honestly, I still have no idea what that even meant.  They had big ass BBQ'd Turkey Legs on special on the cheap, but that was about it.

Soooo, yeah.  I had one of these cheap, giant big ass Turkey Legs.  It was VERRRRY guuude.  Fries and cole slaw were included.  Oh, yum.

Daytime:
glass of Orenthal James = 100 calories
box of Raisins = 130 cal.
Salsa (leftovers!!) = 50 ish Calories
tortilla chips = 300 cal.
apple = 80 cal.

Night:
3 glasses of our IPA = roughly like 750 Calories
big ass BBQ Turkey leg = 250 cal.
cole slaw = 125 cal.
french fries = 200 cal.
beef ribs (3 bones) = 300 cal.

Workout:  NO TIME!!!  I had to hit up Wal-Mart for a few personal effects before the bottling.

Tuesday Grand Total = 2300 Calories

Happy Hump day.  I'm out.

Man v. Scale - weigh in #4

Wow, so it has been about a month since I started my "action plan".  I feel like each of these weigh ins are making me increasingly more nervous...and most especially this one.

It has been two weeks since I tipped the scale.  Last week was, of course, a travel week...and it has been well documented that I did not stick to my guns.  Even after two weeks of workouts and moderate success on the eating front, I still stepped on the scale this morning hoping for ANYTHING in a positive direction.  Anything!!!  Even 1/2 - 1 lb. I would consider a win.

Soooooo, without further ado....I stepped up on the scale, and this is what it said:

210.2

Heeeeeellll yeeeeeeaaaaaahh.  PUT IT ON THE BOARD.

Again...seriously...this makes me soooooo happy.  I'm DOWN another 3 pound from 2 weeks ago!!  What the F??  Imagine if I was actually a fascist about this.

This really put me in an immediate better mood.  You should have SEEN the big ass smile on my face.

All total, I believe that I am down something like 9.8 pounds.....I can't believe this is actually working.  Exposing myself to the world...all of my faults....all of my bad choices...really seems to be making a difference.*

     * - I sure hope that my scale is functioning properly

Monday food Recap:

Daytime:
box of Sun Maid raisins = 130 calories
salad (fat free honey dijon, one serving of shredded cheese) = about 150 cal.
can of albacore tuna = 130 cal.
one Washington Apple = 80 cal.

Night:
Guacamole (made by me, yo) = 225 calories
Salsa (again, my own creation made with lots of fun colorful peppers) = 75 calories
tortilla chips (these bitches are frickin fatty) = at least 300 calories
skinny cow skinny dipper ice cream = 80 calories

Monday Grand Total = 1150 Calories

Workout:  Yes, please.  Had a nice 1.5 mile jog....I'm was still fairly wiped from the weekend, so my circuit of machines was pretty weak.  I made due.

Have a GREAT WEEK dudes.  I know i will.

Day 31 Food Recap - Sunday, Boring Sunday

As a result of generously mixing a bottle of red Wine, Miller High Life, and 4 multi-colored Jello shots, I awoke Sunday morning with a TUMOR on the side of my head. Motivation for the day was NEXT TO NOTHING!!

I had grand plans to go to the Rec., as well as hit up Trader's and Wal-Mart for a few personal items. Nope.

Essentially, my Sunday consisted of the following 3 things:

1. Sitting on the couch
2. Watching the Olympics, and
3. Eating breakfast for dinner

Victory.

Food consumed:
pretzels = 110 calories
poached egg over toasted french bread = 175 cal.
2 slices of bacon = 110 cal.
2 small red potatoes, diced and broiled with garlic and evoo = 150ish calories
candy (while reading one of Anthony Bourdain's books) , 1 serving = 75 calories

Workout = My only activities on Sunday were getting off the couch to get more coffee/water, and going to the bathroom.

Sunday's Grand Total = 620 Calories

I essentially punished myself by eating as little as possible Sunday. I'm quickly realizing that I don't take very good care of my body on the weekend(s).

I have a showdown Tuesday morning. I may be in for a disappointment.

Days 29 and 30 Food Recaps

This particular weekend has been fun! The games of the 21st Winter Olympiad kicked off quite ceremoniously Friday evening. (too bad Canada still found a way to slide a massive glitch in the opening ceremony; oh, and what was up with Gretsky's facial gestures?)

I will have to say that the Olympics in general have become fairly irrelevant, but honestly, I still find them entertaining, and I will keep an eye on that medal count throughout. My current fave event is, oddly, Curling. I really got INTO it 4 years ago. And it doesn't hurt that some of the American team members are hot (i think). I can't wait.

Anyway, so with the Opening of the Vancouver Olympics comes Olympic themed parties both Friday and Saturday!! What comes with a party you ask?? Drinking. And a subsequent EPIC FAIL for me this weekend. Too much alcohol. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I'm once again nervous for my Tuesday morning weigh in. It will be two weeks since my last one, obviously due to my business trip last week. At this point, I guess a weight loss OF ANY KIND will be considered a victory.

Friday the 12th:
Day:
strawberry pop tart = 190 calories
diet cola
6" Subway Ham and Turkey, no cheese = 300 cal.
bag of Sun Chips = 200 cal.
piece of office birthday cake (FAIL, i know, but i literally had like 2 bites) = 75 cal.

Night:
pretzels = 200 cal.
pretzel pieces = 200 cal.
cheese/crackers = 125 cal.
Miller High Life 3 @ 130 = 390 cal.
Miller Lite 2 @ 96 = 192 cal.
raisinets = 175 cal.

No workout.

Friday Grand Total = 2055 Calories

Saturday:
Day:
coffee
box of sunmaid raisins = 130 cal.
pretzels = 110 cal.

Night:
Carnitas Burrito
tortilla shell = 200 cal.
pork tenderloin = 200 cal.
cheese/sour cream = 50 cal.
cheese/crackers/bread = 200 cal.
BOTTLE of Cabernet Sauvignon (wow, what a lush) = 400 cal.
jello shots 4 @50 = 200 cal.
Miller High Life 3 @130 = 390 cal.
Miller Lite = 96 cal.
blue cheese toasts = 100 cal.
Workout: Actually DID make it over to the rec and had a nice run on the tready. Hit the machines for 20 or so minutes as well!!

Saturday Grand Total = 2075 Calories

Time to watch some of the Vancouver coverage, maybe an episode or two of Entourage too.

"It's been One Week since you looked at me" - Food recap days 25-28

I'm back, bitches. Where do I even begin?? Unless you've been under a rock for the past 5 days (or you simply don't care about me), you would have known that I've been TRAPPED in Baltimore, MD...stuck in a downtown hotel while the Blizzard of '76 ripped through the Mid-Atlantic.

The week started out fine. I flew into BWI without an issue, rented my car, and then found out that the 2nd half of my bid-ness trip (Fredricksburg) got cancelled!! Thanks.

Anywho, so Monday was actually fairly surprising. After renting a car to drive up to Harrisburg and then checking into a Holiday Inn, I needed somewhere to eat. I get fairly excited on business trips, mainly because I can splurge on extravagant and decadent meals that I normally wouldn't (sh*t, everyone does this, right??). After talking to 3 separate people about the "go to place" in the area, I was unanimously directed to the local watering hole named Gilligan's.

Yes, Gilligan's.

As you may have guessed, I didn't exactly have a warm and fuzzy touching me on the inside going into this. I drive up to this piece, and it looked JUST like you can envision for a mom and pop Harrisburg outskirts bar. Sign discolored and damaged, nowhere to park, Hillbilly's leaning against their trucks, etc. I walk in, and am immediately greeted by 3-4 servers just lounging around in a couple of booths....puffin away on their, what I'm presuming to be, Newports.

BK: "Uhhhh, am I in the right place?"

Server specimen A: "Phreww the dorrrr thurrr" (pointing to a door in the back)

Not to beat around the bush, but I practically high stepped it to the back. These ladies were something else, and they were all looking me over like I was ground chuck. Sorry, I wear a Navy Pea coat. It's nice.

Anyway, so there was indeed an entire semi-legit bar area in the back, with actual patrons. You could compare the atmosphere to, say, Scorchers over there on E. 12th. Fairly dingy, Pennsylvania sports shizz hanging from every wall, et al.

I ordered me up a Michelob Ultra (which ended up being a PBR on accident; no worries, the nice lady bought me my 2nd one), and then PEELED open the menu.

I may sound like I'm laying this on thick, but that's def. not the case....the place was SEEDY. Anyway, so this is all leading up to something, I PROMISE!!! So I open the menu, have a quick glance, and then am honestly taken aback. I have honest sticker shock. You should have seen the high end options I had to choose from....veal marsala, jumbo lump crab cake, fillet mignon, NY strip, swordfish, rack of lamb....you name it, WITH the prices to boot.

As a starter, I went with a daily special. If you know anything about anything in the culinary world, you NEVER order a special, let alone a seafood option at the beginning of the week. I ordered a nice $7 bowl of PEI mussels.

They were amazing. The portion, literally, could have been an entire entree.

I followed that up with another chef's special (i know, i know) the King Cut of Prime Rib, with a VERY healthy sized baked potato and side salad.

My GOD, what a meal of food!! This cut of Prime Rib was f*cking huge, and perfectly cooked. After the mussels and salad, I could barely eat half. Simply amazing.

I might as well have been eating crow....

In the words of some hack more famous than I: Never judge a book by it's cover.*

* - don't worry guys, I still basically hate everything about PA

Due to my unfortunate incarceration in Baltimore, I fell behind in my blogging, and I apologize for that. I was definitely still keeping my journal...and I'll have you know, IT....IS.....UGLY in there.

To my credit, I did find a treadmill each night to hammer out 30 minutes of cardio. Better than nothing I suppose.

I won't blog about all 4 of my missed days, I'll just review a few of the highlights:

Monday the 8th:
Grand Caloric Total = 2340 ish
Highlights: The previous 5 paragraphs

Tuesday, the 9th:
Grand Caloric Total = 1945
Highlights: Finding a bar in the Inner Harbor that was ACTUALLY open. Peter's. Not a bad place. The bartender dude was playing cuts off of his iPod, so I was able to enjoy the Shins and a little Modest Mouse with my Turkey Reuben.

Wednesday, the 10th:
Grand total consumed = 2195 Calories
Highlights: Come on maaaan. You have to give me some credit. By this point, the ENTIRE city of Baltimore was under a Phase 3 city-wide emergency lock down. NOTHING was open; NOBODY was on the streets.

I took a jaunt outside to find some grub at noon, but the only places open were a 7/11, and 2 Chinese take out places. I scrounged through the day on Pringles, and prepackaged ham and cheese. I was going maaaad...sitting in a hotel room all day, staring at the Weather Channel will get to you.

Thursday, the 11th:
Grand total consumed = 2200 Calories
Highlights from the day: AGAIN, the only places open for lunch were now the massive chain conglomerates...the Cheesecake Factories and Hard Rock Cafe's of the world. I chose the ESPN Zone....and boy was I disappointed.

I found myself sitting in the BWI and PHILA airports for a total of 6 hours. Oh effin joy. It was almost IMPOSSIBLE for me to eat well.

In the immortal words of Layne Staley of Alice in Chains:

"No more hiding or disguising the truths I've sold
You find me sitting here by myself, No Excuses that I know"

I promise to get back after it this weekend. No Excuses.

Super Bowl Sunday - Day 24 food recap

NEWSFLASH: The Super Bowl football game was actually...Interesting!

Good game, congrats to the Saints and their glorious city, New Orleans. This was a much deserved win for that city and franchise...though CLEVELAND deserves it 634% more. I've done the research.

Anyway...so I'm sitting here in sunny, magical Harrisburg, PA...hastily trying to recant what I ingested yesterday. My friend's SB Party went off quite well, 7 years running now (mr and I started it 7 years ago, and it has been reinvented/regurgitated a few times over now), yet all of the same, great, fun people show up year after year.

Without going into tooooo much detail, the food was nothing short of amazing. All of the major Super Bowl food groups were present: Buffalo chicken dip (3 kinds), chili (something like 5 or so different incarnations, though MR's entry of Wendy's chili may have taken the proverbial cake), cheesy dips, pizza, wings...you get the point. My contribution was average...pigs in a blanket. They were ok, but i was just too lazy to lug a crock pot over to Cleveland Heights.

I made a VALIANT yet obviously futile attempt at managing my food intake. I tried moderate servings of the 3 buffalo chick dips (all yummy), some of Sister Christian's hoagie dip (yum-o as well), a few of the supposedly low-fat cream cheese/jalapeno roll ups, and an ass load of beer...

...I can't hide this forever....I may have also shotgunned a can of bud light. Let's just leave that as that...oh sh*t, Mitch may have also twisted my arm into doing a shot of Patron too....I mean come on. come on. i was morally obligated to take that shot. that shizz is expensive...

Day:
coffee, coffee
leftover Potato Nachos from Fahrenheit (potato chips, essentially) = 120 cal.

YES. That is all I placed into my mouth before heading over to the SB party @ 4:00.

Night time:
Bud Select 8 @ 99 cal. = 800 calories
Bud Light (shotgunned; that's when you take your longest, sharpest key, punch a hole into the bottom 1/3 of the can of beer, 'cheers' the group, open the top of the can, and the drink the beer that is flowing out of the aforementioned hole really fast-like; you then throw the empty can violently on the ground...usually before everyone else if your name is BK) = 110 cal.
1 shot of Patron Silver tequila = 69 cal. (look it up, bitches, you cant make that up)
1 glass Cabernet = 70 cal.

ASIDE/DISCLAIMER: there's going to be a lot of question marks beside my Calorie totals

cream cheese and jalapeno roll ups; 5 @ 15 cal.?? = 75 cal.
hoagie dip and bread = no clue, but def. no more than a 6-inch sub = 300 cal.
Buffalo chicken dips/tostitos = PASS
pigs in a blanket(6) - i looked this up, btw = like 200 cal.
Doritos; sweet chili flava (2; yes only 2 Glennnn) = 15 cal.
1 hanky panky/shit on a shingle/dogfood thing = uhmmm, any ideas? = 50 cal.?

All in all, I think I practiced moderation...it could have been A LOT worse.

Grand (wrong) Super Bowl Sunday total = 1749 calories not counting the 763 calories of buffalo chicken dips that i will conveniently be ignoring. i don't know. I need a pass, a pass on grass, if you will.

And now I'm traveling this week for work...where steak and seafood dinners will be offered up to me like crack rock in Parma.

Fahrenheit 451 - Day 23 food recap

Saturday was an interesting day of eats for BK. After an unsuccessful morning and afternoon of house hunting (Lakewood, meh. done with lakewood), I stopped in the local Panera bread for a much needed pick me up.

To go along with a nice cup of dark roast, I looked for a respectable bakery treat. The only thing that I dubbed a healthy "looking" option was a "low-cal" blueberry scone. It was ok, it went well with the coffee, etc. I was pleased...until I got home and looked up the nutrition information.

Mother effin Panera. That blueberry scone was frickin 400 calories!!! 4-hundee...!!! Seriously??

I've really GOT to do more research from now on. I've got to be stupid with this now....i really thought i was choosing a nice option....HELL, an asiago cheese bagel with lite cream cheese was only 355 or something....UGH.

Anyway, so Saturday was also date night for BK and ae. I kicked it up a notch (thanks emerill) and decided to go to Fahrenheit, about a half block from my apartment. I'd been there only once before, like 3 years ago, and actually had a poor experience. I've vowed to give Rocco Whalen another shot...and it's REALLY too bad that I didn't do it any sooner.

For a starter, we ordered the Potato Nachos, which were prepared with bacon, scallions, chives, and a silky smooth goat cheese reduction. WOW. enough said. WOW.

Now I'm no food critic, so I'll skip the colorful details. However, the Kobe Beef Short Ribs over a bed of teryaki lo-mein noodles was simply AMAZING. I really won't be able to describe this properly....just done really well. The service was excellent, prompt, et al. Kudos to Fahrenheit, I will be going back.

Day:
coffee, coffee, coffee
Blueberry scone (Panera, duh.) = 390 cal.

Fahrenheit:
4 glasses of Syrah @ 75 cal. = 300 cal.
potato nachos (goat cheese, bac-y, chives, scallions) = 350 cal. ??
bread (honey butter stuff, olive tapenade) = 200 cal.
Kobe Beef short ribs w/ teryaki lo-mein noodles = 650 calories??
1/2 chocolate gelato = 150 cal.

Workout: needed another day off....but does shoveling snow count??

Saturday Grand Total = 2100 calories

I needed a day to splurge, and I got it. Great food, so eh, whatever.

Sunday super bowl food time. Go Colts, go Pete Townsend....and then BK is off to Baltimore, Harrisburg, and Fredricksburg on business...gotta keep focused!!

Day 22 - Friday food recap

SNOW SNOW SNOW.

As feet upon feet of snow fall on Northeastern Ohio, I'm reminded of a lyric by one of my fave bands, Nada Surf: "In the Blizzard...of 2010....cars were just lumps on the snow..."

Seriously. It snowed like the Charles Dickens Friday night....and I was, of course, right smack dab in the middle of it.

Had a poker night with the programmers at work...down in Broadview Heights. It was an honest NIGHTMARE driving home at midnight...feet upon feet of wet, nasty, Cleveland snow was falling, and yet my super cool VW made it through. Thanks buddy.

Anyway, so I was tested, hardcore, at poker night. I brought a sixer of Bud Select with...only 99 calories per, and yet some of that grand Budweiser taste remains (some). So anyway, on to food. Here was the available menu:

Doritos
ruffles
dan dee pretzels
8 boxes of pizza...every topping imaginable

I held steadfast people. I did. No pizza for BK....just a shit load of pretzels. 20 per 110 calories. sacrifices made, goal and plan adhered to.

Day:
strawberry pop tart = 190 calories
salad (mozz, pepperonis) = 250 cal.
cheeze its = 100 cal.
pretzels = 110 cal.

Night time:
Bud Select 6 @ 99 = 600 cal.
glass of cab. sauv. = 75 cal.
pretzels = 200 cal.
cheese and crackers (when i got home at midnight, my drive back was traumatic!) = 200 cal.
candy = 110 cal.

Workout: Nope, only had time for the poker hijinks.

Friday Grand total (and this is not reeeeally the disaster that it could have been) = 1850 cal.

All in all, not too bad...now it's on to more house hunting and the Super Food Bowl tomorrow evening....does THE WHO still have it?? I'm predicting Pinball Wizard, My Generation and Who Are You?

Day 21 food recap

Day 21??? Jeez, it's been 3 weeks already?? Sorta hard to imagine, actually....it doesn't feel like I've been doing this for 3 weeks already...I almost wish I would've started this right at the turn of the new year.

I did ok yesterday. One of those, "not great, but not horrible" type efforts. I splurged a little, and had a nice craft beer with supper (AMAZING how many calories those little b*tches contain!!) and had some Thai take out...the bottom line is that starving myself is not the answer, and I deserve a few splurges every once in a while!!

Thursday the 4th

Day:
strawberry pop tart = 190 calories
can of albacore = 130 cal.
pretzels = 110 cal.
salad (feta, mozz, low-cal balsamic dress) = 200 cal.

Supper:
1/2 cup of steamed rice = 140 calories
1/2 app. of fried wonton (f*cking amazing btw, thx Ty Fun) = 200 cal.
calamari (squid for the lay person) stir fry-ish entree = 150 cal.
Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA = 290 cal. (sh*t yeah...)
skinny cow mint ice cream treat = 80 cal.

Workout: yep, but I'll admit that I limped through this one...damn am I tired, man. I ran a little more than a mile, took a spin around my circuit #3, and then I was outtie.

Thursday Grand Total = 1490 Calories

Have a fun weekend!!

Day 19 and 20 food recap

Keep on keepin' on I suppose. It's been one of "those" weeks so far. I think the anticipation of weekend fun is murdering the mid-week fun quotient.

I've been a good boy so far this week. Maybe almost toooo good. I made my way through Tuesday to the tune of like 825 Calories. At first I'm like, yes, asses kicked....but then I quickly noticed a severe lack of energy both Tuesday night into most of Wednesday. I fought through a nasty headache at work Weds. and had to chug an energy drink just to get to the gym. I'm assuming this is NOT a desirable product of my dieting.

Mental note processed. No more prolonged starvation....lol.

Tuesday
Day:
salad (feta, croutons, vidalia onion dress) = 225 calories
satchel of honey mustard rold gold pretzels = 175 cal.

Suppa:
triscuits = 120 cal.
french bread = 120 cal.
cheese = 120 cal.
candy = 100 cal.

Workout: def. all of the usual suspects. 1.75 mile run/walk, machines (circuit #1)

Tuesday the 2nd, Grand Total = 860 Calories
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday
Day:
Strawberry pop tart = 190 calories
can of tuna = 130 cal.
yogurt (Dannon, cherry and simply awful. never again!!!) = 130 cal.
salad (mozz., vidalia onion dress) = 225 cal.
pretzels (yeah, i was a hungry little camper) = 100 cal.

Suppa:
1/2 broiled chicken breast (rosemary, lime, yum) = 110 cal.
couscous (i know, i know; finally out of it now) = 300 cal.
french bread and dipping oil = 125 cal.
glass of cab. sauv. = 70 cal.
skinny cow skinny dipper ice cream treat = 80 cal. (thx. hoff!!)

Workout: yep, and it felt good. i was tired at first, but a red bull powered me home. i had another nice little run, hit my #2 circuit (i have the weights, machines, etc. at CSU broken up into 3 separate circuits now)...but then i had a wee bit more energy in the tank, so I hit the only open elliptical machine for 15 minutes.

so i'm chuggin right along, really into whatever cool song i had playing...and then out of NOWHERE "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama queues up...playing loud as sh*t. do you know how utterly cool one feels when that song starts playing when you're on a cross trainer?? if only the freshman on the elliptical next to me could hear this now....I'm INSTANTLY teleported back to 1985, back when life was easier...remember the Karate Kid?? That movie was the bees knees to me and my sis. I can remember the exact part in the movie.....ANYWAY...!!!

Sh*t, wait. how the hell did that song even get on my iPod?? i don't own any Bananarama records, i never purchased it from itunes, i don't know anyone that likes them, and i don't steal music. this is going to go down as one of life's great mysteries.

Wednesday Grand Total = 1445 Calories

Man v. Scale - take 3

I'll have you know that the Tuesday weigh-in process literally weighs on my mind. I couldn't stop thinking about it as I tried to fall into slumber Monday night. I really shouldn't be this nervous....for the most part, I'm doing things right; staying the course, so to speak.

I'll also let you in on another tiny, personal secret. All 3 times now that I've grabbed that scale for beside the bathroom cabinet, placed it in front of me, and turned it on, I've muttered the same line to myself...barely audible....as I step up to the plate:

"Don't worry Jake, it's only your life."

It's a line from one of my favorite movies of all time, "Major League". Jake Taylor (Tom Beringer) looking at his locker on the final cut day of spring training for the Tribe, knowing he's made the team, but scared regardless...funny, random, useless...i know.

It IS only my life....not life or death, I'm doing this right, so I should have nothing to worry about, right?

Anyhow...so I step up on the scale, mutter my cynical line, cross my fingers, and this is what is displayed:

213.6

YEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! Put it on the board. Down 3 more effin pounds. Simply unbelievable...good stuff...and funny enough, as I type this right now, at 9:00 am at my desk downtown...i can barely get the words out....I'm backspacing almost every word!!! What a rube.

Anyway, on to my Monday food recap....or as I call it, borderline starvation:

Day:
apple cereal bar = 130 calories
Giant Eagle yogurt = 80 cal.
can of chunk albacore = 120 cal.
salad (feta, croutons, vidalia onion dressing) = 200 cal.

night (don't laugh at me, i just didn't want to make any food):
chips and dip = 225 calories
candy = 100 cal.

I know, I know!!! I MUST attempt to eat healthier....but to my own defense, at least i managed a nice portion control.

Workout: Yep. Got after a nice run, and hit my normal Monday circuit. Feelin' good.

Monday Grand Total = 855 Calories

I'm excited for the week ahead. Poker with the boys on Friday, and then the Food Bowl/Puppy Bowl on Sunday. That's all for now.

A Hard Day's Night(s) - Day 16 and 17 food recap

Took it easy this weekend, stayed in, entertained myself, etc. Staying in affords me a few luxuries that I wouldn't otherwise obtain. The first, and most obvious, being that I get to prepare food myself...healthy options, portion control, and leftovers for the next day!! All good things. I broke out my culinary skills to the tune of Duck Confit on Saturday night. Yeah, bitches. It tasted amazing too.

One also gets to break out never before used Christmas gifts like Beatles Trivial Pursuit!!! My pursuit of trivia fell flat, however....that sh*t was HARD.

I'm comfortable with saying that I know more about the Beatles than the average person....but even I don't know what Paul McCartney's first post-Beatles single was...or even which artist George Harrison was producer for in mid-1968. Oh well, it was tons of fun despite this....and I sincerely hope we break it back out during game night coming up here in 3 weeks!!

Anyway....this is a food blog.

Saturday the 30th
Day:
OJ = 60 cal.
serving of pretzels = 120 cal.

Night:
duck breast confit (red wine and fresh date reduction) = i'm guesstimating 500 cal.
couscous = 150 cal.
french bread/roll = 150 cal.
3 glasses Cab. Sauv. @ 75 = 225 cal.
white ruskie (i know, i know. but now im seriously out of milk) = 200 cal.

Saturday grand calorie total = 1330 Calories. YESSSSSSHH!!!!!

Sunday the 31st.
Brunch:
1 egg (fried, with a bit of melty cheddar cheese) = 100 cal.
home fries (prepared with evoo, garlic, and rosemary) = 150 cal.
English muffin = 120 cal.

While out and about viewing houses:
satchel of pretzels = 120 cal.
1/2 of a Starbucks skinny vanilla latte = 75 cal.

Supper:
homemade Turkey chili (ground turkey breast) = i'm guessing a portion of roughly 400 cal.
cheese and crackers appetizer = 120 cal.
1 glass of Cabernet = 75 cal.
candy = 100 cal.

Sunday Grand Total = 1260 Calories

Workout: Saturday; YES. Sunday; not so much...
I did have quite the interesting set of experiences at the Rec. on Saturday afternoon. First, for some reason beyond me, the CSU rec. has decided to host high school volleyball games all afternoon. There were like 8 sets of 16 and 17 year old v-ballers, and their annoying families. Little munchkins running around, Stepford Wives looking at all of the gym equipment...HIGHLY annoying, especially since I'm not creepy.

Anyway, something else of note happened. While on the jogging machine (treadmill), my new favorite songs of the moment popped on my iPod...right after each other:

"Blood" by the Middle East
"My Girls" by Animal Collective

Now, these aren't necessarily the most workout friendly, intense songs, they were right for the moment....and they are AMAZING. I took it as a sign; fate or something.....then I noticed that my ipod shuffle switch was moved into the normal position, enabling my music to play in the order that i added them....oh hell. oh well.

COMING UP TOMORROW: Tuesday weigh in!!! It's that time ALREADY!!

peace out
